Garbage, Trash & Landfill

water spigit

As a resident, you are allowed one (1) wheeled Toter container for garbage and four other containers for trash at each collection. Plastic bags are preferred for trash and should be securely fastened. The wheeled container cannot weigh over 200 pounds and the trash disposal containers not over 35 pounds each. The other containers cannot have more than a 30-gallon capacity.

Residents may also place bundled tree limbs next to the container. The bundles must be no longer than 4 feet and weigh no more than 35 pounds. The bundles or stacks will count as one of the four containers allowed. Items such as yard trash, grass clippings and shrubbery trimmings, broken or discarded toys, or any other trash must be securely bagged or boxed for easy pickup. Residents are reminded that dangerous material -- such as broken glass -- must be sorted from the rest of the trash and identified as such on the outside of the container. This is necessary to prevent workers from being injured on the job.

The Toter container, other containers and bundles must be placed at curbside for collection before 7:00 am of the scheduled day of collection. All containers and bundles should be placed behind the curbline or between the ditchline and street for collection. Do not place any trash items near the Toter containers, or place trash in ditches as this will block drainage. The Toter and other containers should not be put out for collection before 3 pm on the day before, and removed by 8:00 p.m. the day of the collection.

Apartment buildings with less than 5 units may use wheeled Toter containers and are on the same schedule as residential garbage collection. Commercial establishments may have up to four wheeled Toter containers before they are required to upgrade to commercial container service.

Large Trash Collection such as tree limbs, appliances, furniture, etc. will be collected every other week on the resident's scheduled collection day. Tesidents should place large trash items at the curb or between the ditch and street not more than 48 hours prior to your scheduled collection day. Do not place under low hanging wires or tree limbs nor in ditched. Do not park cars in front of such piles. This will help our City Personnel in avoiding accidents and will not block drainage.

Any residential demolition material or demolition material generated by work requiring a building or demolition permit is the property owner's or contractor's responsibility to haul off and dispose of at the City's landfill. Such material falls outside that which is considered normal household refuse and is not accounted for in the monthly collection and disposal fees paid by citizens. This type of material is not subject to the one (1) free load provision for citizens of Port Arthur.
